North Sikkim
Four districts of Sikkim are East Sikkim, West Sikkim, North Sikkim and South Sikkim. Chungthang is the sub - division of North District. Lachen, Lachung, Mangan, Yumthang, Gurudongmar Lake, Chopta Valley, Green Lake, Katao, Yumesamdong are some of the places of interest in North District. Here the climate is extremely cold and the infrastructure is poor due to its location. This is one of the most sought after tourist destinations and the visitors are overwhelmed by the beauty of this district. The remoteness of the location does not matter to tourist. The region is believed to have been blessed by guru Rimpoche and one can visit the Holy Guru Ihedu to see the foot print left behind by the patron saint. The region is rich in bio - diversity with a wide variety of plants, wild life & orchids. There is the famous Rhododendron forest blooming in spring and partially in autumn.
Monastery at Lachung, Lachen, Phodong and Mangan are worth visiting and so is the hot spring in Yumthang. Lachen Chu and Lachung Chu are the two tributaries with its origin in the north district meeting at Chungthang to form the holy Teesta River the lifeline of Sikkim. The potential of the district is huge hence government are stressing on the infrastructure development for tourism activities to improve.

How to Reach
- Airways: Bagdogra airport (IXB) is approximately 120 kilometers from Gangtok and is 3 to 4 hours drive by car. Lachung and Lachen to Gangtok are approximately 119 / 123 kilometers and is 4 ½ to 5 ½ hours drive by car. Chopper or helicopter (4 seated) service links Bagdogra Airport (IXB) to Gangtok and is 45 minutes ride. Bagdogra Airport has regular flights from Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati and Chennai. Private vehicles are available from Gangtok to reach Bagdogra.
- Railways: Nearest rail head is New Jalpaiguri Station and is approximately 240 kilometers from Lachung and Lachen, a 7 to 8 hours drive and is better to avoid in a day’s drive. Nearest railhead is a tiring 8 hours drive hence a day’s break in Gangtok is required. New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP) is well connected with rest of the country with frequent trains. Recently the government of India has started work to link New Jalpaiguri Station (NJP) to Rangpo the entry point of Sikkim. Hopefully in near future guest can directly get here by train.
- Roadways: National Highway Number 31 A links Gangtok, Gangtok is then linked by road to Mangan, Chungthang, Lachen and Lachung and other places of North Sikkim. The distance from New Jalpaiguri Station (NJP) / Bagdogra Airport to Gangtok is approximately 130 kilometers. Gangtok, Lachung, Lachen, Chungthang, Mangan are well connected by private vehicles plying from North Bengal Bus Terminus run by Sikkim Nationalized Transport (SNT). North Sikkim is a remote area and needs half a day for reaching the destination.

Pick- up from hotel at Gangtok at about 10 a.m. proceed to Lachung (115 Km) at an altitude of 8,600 ft. On the way stop and enjoy a few wonderful locations like Tashi Viewpoint, Kabi Lungstok, Naga Waterfalls, the confluence of Lachen chu and Lachung Chu at Chungthang, Twin Waterfalls and Bhim Nala Waterfalls. LACHUNG – YUMTHANG - LACHUNG
After breakfast leave for Yumthang (11,800 ft.) On the way you may visit the famous hot spring. Yumthang is a large valley surrounded by mountains where the tree line ends. In April/ May /June the valley erupts in a riot of colours as Rhododendrons, Primulae and many other Alpine Flowers are in full bloom. In the winter months, Yumthang is somber with snow all around, and the anow clad mountains adding to the ethereal beauty. Return to Lachung for Lunch. After lunch visit Lachung Monastery, Cottage Industry and Waterfalls. Dinner will be served at about 8p.m.

LACHUNG-GANGTOK
After breakfast leave for Gangtok. On the way stops between singhik, Mangan and if the weather is clear you may get to see the Khangchendzonga Range. This location offers a majestic view of Mt. Pandim, Mt. Kabru, Mt. Simvo, Mt. Jopuno, Mt. Khangchendzonga and Mt. Siniolchu. After lunch at Namok, visit Phodong Monastery on the way o/n at Gangtok.
